Happy 4th of July. What does Independence Day mean to you? Do you consider yourself free? Or do you find the whole parade a charade every year? It seems to me the whole idea has always been a sick joke. Once I was old enough to learn about genocide and the realities of slavery it was hard to swallow the mendacity of the celebration of freedom.
I'll let actor James Earl Jones read the words of the great abolitionist Frederick Douglass's speech “What to the Slave Is 4th of July?”. Given in July 5, 1852, listen closely and seriously consider do his words speak truth to power not only for his era, but for the times we live in now.
